Course Reserves

Overview

Our course reserves service helps students get to course readings and other materials quickly and easily. Course reserve lists may be accessed in MyUW (http://my.wisc.edu) or Learn@UW (https://learn@uw.wisc.edu).

The reserve list is included on the class' Library Course Page which integrates all relevant library resources on a single Web page.

Print and audiovisual reserves

Books and other physical materials are placed in a closed stack area. Students checkout materials at the Circulation desk for a short time, either 1 hour or 3 hours depending on the type of material.

Electronic reserves

Any course-related materials submitted by instructors for the use of students enrolled in the current semester and complying with the Libraries' electronic reserve policy may be included.

Links we typically include:

  • pdf files of documents we scan (copy supplied by instructor)
  • direct links to items in licensed resources such as electronic journal articles
  • files created by an instructor such as Microsoft Powerpoint slides
  • links to relevant web sites supplied by the instructor
  • streamed audio files of lectures

Library Course Pages

Library Course Pages are created by librarians in collaboration with faculty and instructional staff and are tailored to a specific course’s needs and assignments.

Depending on the course, the Library Course Page contains:

  • electronic reserves links
  • a link to a list of print materials on reserve for the class in campus libraries
  • links to research tools such as journal databases and Web sites
  • tips and techniques for making your library research faster and more efficient
  • Refworks, for help in formatting your bibliographies
  • contact information for personal assistance when you need help in completing your assignments

Instructors interested in having a Library Course Page developed may contact:

Placing items on electronic reserve

Electronic reserves are delivered as part of a Library Course Page under a tab labeled "Reserves".

The items on the Reserves tab of your Library Course Page can be arranged in a variety of ways:

  • alphabetically by title
  • by week readings are needed
  • by topic
  • or any other arrangement requested

How to submit

  • Include a course syllabus with your request to help clarify any questions that arise.
  • Send paper copies to be scanned to Sylvia Pfender or drop off at the Reserves desk.
  • When readings are available through a licensed resource, provide complete citations so we may create accurate links to the source.
  • Electronic files for instructor created materials may be sent to our Reserves department as email attachments or you may drop off disks or CDs at the 2nd floor Reserve desk. You may email us citations and sources for articles from licensed resources. Please note our deadlines and processing times.

Placing items in the reserve collection

Please discuss any special needs with Reserves staff.

BOOKS PHOTOCOPIES AUDIOVISUALS
* Reserve staff retrieve Steenbock stack materials, except Reference or Periodicals, and move to Reserves Collection. * Note: Photocopies complying with our Electronic Reserve Policy will be scanned and made available electronically.

* Sixty-minute audio tapes are preferred due to durability. Instructors may request library staff to duplicate tapes. Blank tapes must be supplied. We provide digital access to lecture tape content for some courses.

* Personal copies accepted with owner's name, address and phone. Barcode labels will be attached. Not responsible for theft or damage. * Provide one copy of articles or book chapters and one to two copies of exams, problem sets and answer keys

* VHS video tapes or DVDS

* CDS

* Items not owned will be ordered whenever possible. Please ORDER EARLY! * Best possible copy is ESSENTIAL, avoid black edges. * PC software only
* To expedite book purchases, tell us when books have been ordered for students at local bookstores. * Leave a one-inch left margin to allow for stapling paper copy into manila folders or binders. * Items needed for in-class use may be reserved by making arrangements with the Reserve supervisor.
Provide a complete citation (author, title, source, publisher, copyright date (i.e. c2005) & publication date if available.

Removing materials from the Reserve Collection

  • Items typically remain in the Reserves Collection for one full year as a convenience, but ARE NOT automatically "on reserve" for a subsequent semester. Unless we are notified to retain items for a subsequent semester, they are removed and returned to the stacks or the instructor.
  • Electronic Reserve files are only available online during the semester course is being taught.
  • Please notify reserves staff before coming to retrieve personal materials. Materials will be de-processed and ready to go upon your arrival. Materials may also be returned via campus mail or truck service.
  • To have materials returned, either to the stacks or the owner, please call (263-8331) or email us.

Usage Statistics

At the end of the semester, the number of times each in-library item was used is recorded and noted on the course reading list. These are distributed prior to the start of next semester the course is taught.

Use of electronic reserves (number of times file was requested from the server during the semester) is given as a total for all items for the course. Semester use of specific files is available upon request.

Very high use may mean additional copies are needed. Items which were used very little, especially those not used at all, should be considered for elimination from the list.
