Help for Finding Case Study Books: Your assignment is to read two book-length case studies about families or individuals dealing with poverty and hunger. One must be in the US and one in a developing country.

Madcat is the source for finding books. Link to Madcat at http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/

For this assignment you may want to:

• To find a particular book (for example, one from the assignment bibliography) do a Basic Search by Title:

Madcat title search

Tip: If the book you need is checked out, you may be able to borrow it from another UW campus using UW System Search

You can see an extensive list in Madcat. This link will retrieve a list of over 700 titles that may be helpful for your assignment.

Use Set More Limits button and/or edit your Search History button to reduce the number of titles retrieved by this search.

You can search by subject in Madcat.

    • Follow a subject heading link from the listing for one good book to find others on the same topic

    • Search for particular keywords. Use a Guided Search to combine keywords. Terms that may be useful for your topic include:
          poor
          poor aged
          poor children
          poor women
          rural poor
          urban poor
          working poor
          welfare recipients
          poverty
          famines
          hunger
          case studies
          cost and standard of living
          rural conditions
          social conditions
          developing countries
          Names of individual countries
Tip: for LDCs, use name of country; for U.S., try names of individual states. If you use a broad term
such as "Asia," you will not retrieve studies limited to a particular Asian country, e.g. Vietnam.
