Renew/Recall Materials

Renew -To extend the loan period of items you currently have checked out.

  • Use My MadCat Account
  • Phone 608-262-1371. You'll need your 11-digit patron ID number and barcode # of each item
  • Stop by the Steenbock Library Circulation Desk. You'll need your valid UW-Madison ID, Steenbock Library card, or General Library System card and barcode # of each item.

Two renewals for undergrad/other and six for faculty/staff and graduate students are allowed unless item is recalled.

Recall - To request an item currently checked out be returned and held for you. You will be notified when it is available.

Return Materials

Materials may be returned to the Steenbock book drops (outside) and inside at the Steenbock Circulation desk.

Books on regular loan can be returned to any campus library with an Open Return sticker (see image) on its book return.

DO NOT return audiovisual materials (maps, videos, audiocassettes, microfiche, microfilm, etc.) or items with loan periods of seven days or less to other campus libraries.

Return journals directly to the Steenbock Circulation desk. DO NOT return to other campus libraries.

Return all reserves material to the Steenbock Reserves Desk 2nd floor during library open hours. When library is closed, use the Steenbock outside book drop (near 2nd floor entrance).

DO NOT return reserve materials to other campus libraries.

Book Retrieval

To request campus library books (not checked out) from other libraries be sent to Steenbock (or another library) for pickup.
  • When you find an item in MadCat, use the Place Request button and fill out the form.
  • Delivery within 1-3 business days. You will be notified by email when the item is available for you to check out.
  • You may also use My MadCat Account to see if items you have requested are waiting for you at the pickup location.

Distance library services

Distance Library Services are intended for UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff that reside outside of Dane County. While many of the Web based services mentioned are available to all members of the UW-Madison community, this service is specifically tailored for members of the UW-Madison community who live and work outside of Dane County - including dissertators, students taking distance courses, and faculty on sabbatical.

Faculty Runners

Faculty members and academic staff with teaching or research responsibilities can designate a currently enrolled student or staff member to borrow material in their name from campus libraries. To designate a runner:

  1. Fill in the requested information on the attached form
  2. Print it out on departmental letterhead
  3. Sign it
  4. Have the runner take the signed letter to the Memorial Library Card Application Desk, located in the lobby of the Memorial Library. The runner will need to bring his/her UW photo ID.
