Steenbock Stack Materials
To borrow stack materials (most books, documents and audiovisuals) found in MadCat, take them to the Circulation/Reserves Desk located on the entrance level (2nd floor). Loan periods for Steenbock materials vary. Materials may be borrowed by presenting:
- a valid UW-Madison ID card
- a UW-Madison General Library System card including faculty runners (see link to the left)
- a valid UW System ID
- a Steenbock Library card is available to Wisconsin residents who are not affiliated with the UW System. Apply at the Steenbock Circulation Desk on 2nd floor, and show a Wisconsin driver's license or Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation photo ID.
NOTE: The Steenbock Library card is only good at Steenbock and only for Steenbock materials.
You may also request Steenbock stack materials be retrieved from the shelf and delivered to the campus library most convenient to you.
If the item you need has the status "checked out" in MadCat, you may try a UW System search and borrow the item from another UW campus.
Steenbock Reserve Materials
Reserve materials are print books and audiovisuals that instructors have asked us to set aside for the use of students in specific courses. To find out what's in our reserve area, check the Library Course Page for the course in MyUW. Reserved books owned by the Libraries may also be found in MadCat by selecting the Course Reserve search.
To borrow reserve materials go to the Circulation/Reserves Desk located on the entrance level (2nd floor). Loan periods vary. Materials may be borrowed by presenting:
- a valid UW-Madison ID card
- a UW-Madison General Library System card including faculty runners (see link at left)
- a valid UW System ID
- a Steenbock Library card is available to Wisconsin residents who are not affiliated with the UW System. Apply at the Steenbock Circulation Desk on 2nd floor, and show a Wisconsin driver's license or Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation photo ID.

Interlibrary Loans / Holds
Books and other materials sent from other libraries to Steenbock Library for pickup will be held at the Circulation/Reserves Desk located on the entrance level (2nd floor). The usual forms of identification are required for check out.
This includes:
- Items requested using "Place Requests" in MadCat or UW System search
- Items borrowed from other libraries.
Loan periods for materials borrowed from off-campus libraries are determined by the lending library. More on the Libraries' article and book delivery services.
Notices about electronic copies of articles or book chapters requested through Interlibrary Loan are sent to your email. Or login to check on request status.
Laptops & Other Equipment
- Laptops are checked out at the Circulation/Reserves desk.
- Two Forms of ID required:
- UW-Madison ID
- Driver's license, Wisconsin ID, or passport
- Loan period is 3 days. Check when your laptop is due
- Checkout policies and how to pay fines
- Pay a fine with a debit or credit card
- 50 13" Macbook Laptops - runnning both Windows XP and Apple OS X with:
- Includes carrying case and power adapter. Loaded with standard software including Microsoft office. Note: Adobe Creative suite is only available on Infolab Desktop computers.
- Other Labs with laptop checkout
Headphones
- Check out at the Computer InfoLab desk on 2nd floor
- Requires an ID
- Must be used in the library
Renew Materials
Renew -To extend the loan period of items you currently have checked out.
- Log in to My MadCat, check the box next to the item and click renew.
- Stop by the Steenbock Library Circulation Desk with the item. You'll need your valid UW-Madison ID, Steenbock Library card, or General Library System card.
Two renewals for undergrad/other and six for faculty/staff and graduate students are allowed unless item is recalled.
Recall Materials
Recall - To request an item currently checked out be returned and held for you. You will be notified by email when it is available.
- Find the item in MadCat. (Items from other UW System libraries may not be recalled.)
- Click on Place Request and log in with your NetID or ID number.
- Select RECALL from current borrower.
- Select your pick-up location to request the item and have it held for you.
- The original due date is modified and typically results in a shortened loan period. However, the current borrower may keep the item for at least 14 days. The current borrower will be notified by email and informed of the new due date and asked to return the item. Once returned, the item is held at the preferred library and an email notifies the person issuing the recall that it is available for pick-up.
Return Materials/Recalled Items
Returning Items to Steenbock
Materials may be returned to the Steenbock book drops (outside) and inside at the Steenbock Circulation/Reserves desk (2nd floor).
Return all Steenbock reserves material to the Steenbock Circulation/Reserves Desk during library open hours. When the library is closed, use the Steenbock outside book drop (near 2nd floor entrance).
Return journals directly to the Steenbock Circulation/Reserves desk.
Recalled Items
Recalled items should be returned to the library they were borrowed from in order to avoid a potential fine.
Returning Items to Other Campus Libraries
Books on regular loan, including those borrowed via Interlibrary Loan (formerly Library Express), may be returned to any campus library with an Open Return sticker (see image) on its book return or see a list of participating libraries here.

DO NOT return the following Steenbock materials to other campus libraries:
- reserve materials
- journals
- audiovisual materials (maps, videos, audiocassettes, microfiche, microfilm, etc.)
- items with loan periods of seven days or less
Designate a Faculty Runner
Faculty members and academic staff with teaching or research responsibilities may designate a currently enrolled student or staff member to borrow materials in their name from campus libraries. To designate a runner:
- Fill in the requested information on the attached form
- Print it out on departmental letterhead
- Sign it
- Have the runner take the signed letter to the Memorial Library Card Application Desk, located in the lobby of the Memorial Library. The runner will need to bring his/her UW photo ID.
